STA LSP · Core Pathway
The numbered grade system is the heart of the STA Learn to Swim Programme — each grade builds systematically on the last, from foundation skills to elite-level performance.
Learners in Grades 1 and 2 may use buoyancy aids during assessment criteria.
From Grade 3 onwards, no buoyancy aids are permitted for any assessment criteria.
Confident movement through water, star floating, push and glide and basic breath control.
All travel distances increase to 10m; key rotation skills (log roll) introduced alongside breaststroke attempt.
Learners must know the water safety code, swim two recognised strokes to 10m and demonstrate underwater skills.
All three stroke distances grow to 15m. Introduces the handstand and lifesaving-themed swimming elements.
Major strokes extend to 25m; surface diving, somersaults and survival swimming in clothing introduced.
50m per stroke to Swim England standard, a 75m medley, full lifesaving sequence in clothing and kneeling dive.
100m primary stroke, butterfly 25m, advanced lifesaving sequence in clothing and plunge dive.
