Grade 5

25m strokes, surface dives, somersaults and survival swimming in clothing — a significant step up. No buoyancy aids.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 5 is a significant progression — all major strokes extend to 25m, surface diving and somersaults are introduced, and survival swimming in clothing becomes a core requirement.

NO buoyancy aids permitted for any criteria.

Clothing (t-shirt) required for criterion 2.

  1. 1.Take part in rescue with buoyant aid or rope.
  2. 2.Step or straddle entry, tread water 30 seconds, 360° turn in t-shirt, remove t-shirt, climb out.
  3. 3.Push and glide into front crawl or breaststroke 25m correct finish (first choice).
  4. 4.Push and glide into backstroke 25m correct finish.
  5. 5.Push and glide into front crawl or breaststroke 20m correct finish (second choice).
  6. 6.Push and glide, attempt butterfly arms 10m.
  7. 7.Head-first and feet-first surface dive.
  8. 8.Scull head first 15m and feet first 15m.
  9. 9.Forward or backward somersault.
  10. 10.Swim 25m lifesaving backstroke or sidestroke.
