A globally recognised, named-award pathway guiding swimmers from first water confidence through to elite performance. Used by STA-qualified teachers in swim schools across the world.
The STA International Learn to Swim Programme (ILSP) is a well-established, internationally recognised framework designed to take swimmers of all ages from their first water experience through to advanced swimming competence.
Built around six named award series — Starfish, STAnley, Octopus, Goldfish, Angelfish and Shark — plus Advanced and Platinum capstone awards, the programme provides clear, measurable progression milestones that motivate swimmers and give parents confidence.
Each series is delivered by STA-qualified teachers and is structured to build physical skills, water safety awareness and confidence in a positive, enjoyable environment.
Follow the pathway from early water confidence all the way through to elite swimming skills. Each series builds on the last with clear, achievable criteria.
Early years and beginner water confidence with adult support. Introduces safe entries, floating, movement in water and blowing bubbles — all with parent or carer present.
Foundation swimming, developing from supported movement to confident independent swimming. Introduces front crawl, back crawl, water safety knowledge and early stroke technique.
Independent swimming development. Introduces all four stroke kicks, sculling, dolphin kick and breaststroke foundations. Buoyancy aids permitted in levels 1–2.
All four strokes established and developed. No buoyancy aids throughout. Introduces lifesaving backstroke, sculling technique and advanced float positions.
Advanced stroke technique with correct breathing and finishes. Introduces survival skills, surface dives, clothing in water, straddle entry and butterfly stroke.
Elite swimming, lifesaving rescue techniques and competitive starts. Long-distance swims, individual medley, Old English backstroke, sidestroke and diving skills.
