Stage Overview

Stage 1 introduces learners to the aquatic environment, building basic water confidence and fundamental movement patterns. Flotation equipment may be used throughout this stage.

Assessment Criteria

  1. Enter the water safely.
  2. Move forward 5 metres (feet may be on or off the pool floor).
  3. Move backwards 5 metres.
  4. Move sideways 5 metres.
  5. Scoop water and wash face.
  6. Comfortable with water showered from overhead.
  7. Move from a flat floating position on the back, return to standing.
  8. Move from a flat floating position on the front, return to standing.
  9. Push and glide on the front from the wall.
  10. Push and glide on the back from the wall.
  11. Give examples of two pool rules.
  12. Exit the water safely.
